Recently, the graphic design platform Canva launched a new tool called Magic Write. With it, you can type five or more words that describe what you want to write, and the program will write it.
So, I thought I’d give it a chance and see what it’s all about. Using prompts and sentences related to economic development, as well as comments or questions that we often receive yielded some pretty interesting results.
In part I, I asked some general questions about AI and economic development to get a feel of the program, and in part II, I tried out lists. For this part, I asked some deeper and more specific questions about who’s involved in economic development and who it affects.
While some questions were answered in detail, others needed to be rephrased or fleshed out, starting with the first one. Check them out below.
“Who is responsible for economic development”
This appears to be a political topic, which is not supported while we release this technology in a responsible manner. Please try a different prompt.
So, I rephrased the question.
“Who plays a role in economic development”
There are various stakeholders who play a role in economic development. These include governments, businesses, investors, workers, and consumers. Governments can create policies and provide funding to support economic growth. Businesses and investors can create job opportunities and stimulate innovation through new products and services. Workers contribute to the economy through their labor, while consumers drive demand for goods and services. It is important for all these stakeholders to work together to create a sustainable and thriving economy.
I then asked more pointed questions.
“Who is affected by economic development”
Economic development can affect various groups of people, including individuals, businesses, and communities. Individuals can be affected positively by economic development through increased job opportunities, higher wages, and improved access to goods and services. However, economic development can also have negative impacts, such as displacement due to gentrification or environmental degradation. Businesses can benefit from economic development through increased demand for goods and services, access to new markets, and improved infrastructure. Finally, communities can be impacted by economic development through changes in the local economy, population growth, and shifts in cultural and social dynamics.
“What role do individuals play in economic development”
Individuals play a crucial role in economic development. They are the driving force behind innovation, entrepreneurship, and productivity. By creating new products and services, starting businesses, and developing new technologies, individuals contribute to economic growth and job creation. They also play a key role in the labor market by providing the skills and labor necessary for businesses to operate and expand. Additionally, individuals are consumers, whose spending habits impact the overall economy. Overall, individuals are essential to economic development and growth.
“Why is it important for individuals to get involved in their community's economic development”
It is important for individuals to get involved in their community's economic development because it can bring about several benefits. One of the primary benefits is the creation of job opportunities, which can improve the standard of living for community members. Additionally, economic development can attract new businesses and increase the tax base, leading to improved infrastructure and public services. It can also enhance the overall quality of life in the community by promoting tourism, cultural events, and recreational activities. Ultimately, by participating in economic development, individuals can play an active role in shaping the future of their community and ensuring its long-term success.
“Why is it important for individuals to invest in their communities”
It is important for individuals to invest in their communities for several reasons. Investing in one's community can lead to a stronger sense of belonging and connection, as well as a greater sense of pride in one's surroundings. Additionally, investing in local businesses and organizations can help to stimulate the local economy and create job opportunities. Investing in community infrastructure, such as parks and community centers, can also lead to improved quality of life for residents. Finally, investing in one's community can help to foster a sense of civic responsibility and encourage individuals to become more involved in local politics and decision-making processes.
“Being a business owner is a part of economic development because”
Being a business owner is vital for economic development.
Straight to the point, but I wanted a little bit more.
“Being a business owner is a part of economic development because”
Being a business owner contributes to the overall economic development.
Still, a little more.
“Entrepreneurship is an important part of economic development because”
Entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in driving economic growth and development. It encourages innovation, creates job opportunities, and helps to diversify the economy. Entrepreneurs are able to identify market gaps and create products or services that meet the needs of the community. This leads to increased productivity and competitiveness, and ultimately contributes to the overall prosperity of a country.
Then, I asked the question we all want to know.
“Will AI replace people in jobs”
The question of whether AI will replace people in jobs is a complex one. While AI has already replaced human workers in some industries, it is unlikely that it will completely replace people in all jobs. Rather, AI is expected to complement human work and improve efficiency in many industries. However, it is important for individuals to stay informed about the potential impact of AI on their job and to develop skills that will be valuable in an increasingly automated workforce.
Final thoughts: Similar to my takeaways from the previous blogs and the answer above, I agree that AI can be a good complement to the work that we do and help improve our efficiency. It was spot on with noting that many others play a role in economic development– not just economic developers–and that individuals are just as responsible for their community’s economic development, even if it didn’t want to or couldn’t say it.
A human touch will always be needed though. Similar to interviewing an individual, I had to frame the questions in a certain way to get the desired results, but, unlike, a human being, it couldn’t see the frustration on my face when I had to ask the same question several times to get a different result.
During the most recent session of the South Carolina Economic Developers Institute that our staff attended, the speakers made sure to emphasize that AI will not replace jobs, but it will replace tasks. Though that may not spark 100% confidence, I think that’s a great way to look at it.
